From the ASEE aggregator. I will have to connect with these people when I begin my own research…

The Dracut (MA) Valley Dispatch (1/12, Feinstein) reported that a program called Exploring the Efficacy of Elementary Engineering (E4 Project) “will gauge the efficacy of different techniques for teaching engineering to” young students, fifth graders. Also, the E4 Project will “evaluate how engineering instruction affects children from groups that are underrepresented in engineering, including girls.” Christine Cunningham, who leads the E4 project, said, “Our preliminary research suggests that very young children really can master engineering concepts and practices -and that they benefit in a number of ways when engineering is part of their classroom experience.”

Hmmm…an interesting retention policy to encourage credential completion, as seen in my ASEE aggregator email:

The Zanesville (OH) Times Recorder (1/1) reports Ohio Rep. Jay Hottinger (R-Newark) and Rep. Armond Budish (D-Beachwood) is co-sponsoring legislation that would give income tax credits to students who earn STEM degrees “and who stay in Ohio at least five years upon graduation.” Students earning associate degrees would be eligible for a $5,000 tax credit. Students earning bachelor’s degrees would be receive a $20,000 credit. Students earning master’s degrees or doctorates would get a $30,000 credit.

From the ASEE aggregator:
The Dearborn (MI) Press and Guide (12/17, Hetrick) reports Henry Ford Community College believes more hands-on courses will increase students interest in engineering careers. The college will offer two Project Lead the Way courses for dual-enrollment students currently in high school. Chad Richert, who will teach Introduction to Engineering Design, said in his “class students will get a problem to solve.” Jeff Whittaker, who will teach Principles of Engineering, said his class will give students a basic understanding of robotic

From the ASEE aggregator:

The PBS’ NewsHour (12/10) reports Spelman College’s Beverly Daniel Tatum is one of four college presidents to receive the Carnegie Corporation’s annual Academic Leadership Award. The foundation cited Tatum’s work in encouraging women to pursue STEM careers. In an interview with correspondent Gwen Ifill, Tatum said “when they come to Spelman, they are exposed to faculty who represent a very diverse group of faculty, men and women – 52 percent of our STEM faculty are women. A third of them are women of color, so that they’re a broad range of role models and they see that the sky really is the limit.”

More positive news from the ASEE aggregator:

The San Francisco Chronicle (9/26, Floum) reports on the Hackbright Academy. The academy teaches “women how to program in a supportive, all-female environment.” In its first year, the San Francisco ten-week crash course graduated close to eighty female software engineers. The article notes that “55 women graduated with computer science or related bachelor’s degrees from UC Berkeley, and 27 women graduated with computer science degrees from Stanford in 2012,” according to the American Society for Engineering Education.

Under the headline, “Why Aren’t Women Interested in Computer Science?,” the Wall Street Journal (9/25) “Digits” blog reported the number of women pursuing computer jobs has been falling. Women made up 27 percent of computer jobs in 2011, but the number has fallen since 1990 when it was on 34 percent.

From the ASEE aggregator:
In US News & World Report (9/17) Amy Fleischer, PhD., a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Villanova University and the Director of the Novatherm Laboratory, wrote that if our nation does not acknowledge that America’s lack of “is not an ability-driven gap but instead a pervasive socialization problem that begins at the earliest ages, then we will continue to alienate and exclude half our population from these critical fields.” Fleischer wrote that “it is overt social pressures that continue to steer most girls away from these fields despite their natural talents and abilities.” She wrote that if the US wants to continue its “dominance in technology development and secure our nation’s economic future, it is absolutely imperative that we educate thousands more engineers.”

Thank you for nominating me for the 2013 APEGBC Council. I look forward with anticipation to this natural next step in my service to British Columbia and to the engineering and geoscience professions.

As I become more involved in professional community outreach, I am increasingly aware that the engineering reputation (fortunately, not so much geoscience) is having a negative impact on our youth and their parents and counsellors regarding entering the profession. I believe that, for the long-term success of engineering and geoscience in the global community, we must encourage our members to model what we hope to see as the future of our profession: gender balance and diversity.

These two topics consistently resonate with APEGBC and community members when we discuss our vision of the future, revealing a fundamental concern: fairness for all.  I have heard this from professionals in small and medium enterprises and from professionals in very large corporations, from men and from women.

I believe in fairness and the inclusion of all voices at all levels.  If elected to council, I will ensure all voices and needs are heard.

Governance experience to date:

  • Outreach Coordinator, APEGBC-Victoria Branch (13 years on executive)
  • Camosun College Board of Governors (3 years)
  • Academic Governance Council of British Columbia (3 years)
  • Education Council, Camosun College (6 years)
